What is World AIDS Day about?

World AIDS Day is observed on December 1 in over 190 countries worldwide. World AIDS Day and events and activities in the week leading up to it, aim to raise awareness in the community about HIV/AIDS, including the need for support and understanding for people living with HIV/AIDS, and the need for education and prevention initiatives.

HIV is still here in Australia it hasn't gone away.

  • 20 years of the Red Ribbon; the iconic symbol of support for people with HIV.
  • 30 years of HIV.
  • HIV affects people of all ages, sex, race and culture.
  • HIV related stigma and discrimination still exists and you can challenge it.
  • People with HIV face stigma and discrimination in daily lives; at work, family, community, access to health care.
  • There are ways that HIV can and cannot be transmitted.
  • You can prevent HIV transmission by:
    • using condoms with new and casual partners,
    • getting tested for HIV and other STIs
    • never sharing injecting equipment
